Teaching Blog Online #2

This is a great blog that is about “Phonics and Homeschooling”. It is very interesting because they are explaining with good writing and personal voice about a method of teaching reading in which people learn to associate letters with the speech sounds they represent, rather than learning to recognize the whole word as a unit. For me, it is very useful because it has a lot of info that I can put in practice at the moment to give a reading class. On the other hand, I can say that is very useful for teachers and even for parents at the moment to tech their children how to read.

Teaching Vocabulary Tips

- First of all the teachers need to decide what kind of vocabulary they should teach. Likewise, an important thing that the teachers should considers at the moment to teach vocabulary to a 3th grade students is that they should not teach more than 10 words in one class, also that all those words should be included in a text, they should not be taught separately. This is the easier way for the students to learn a word because at the moment they are reading they get interested on what the text is about so they make an effort to understand each word and at the same time they will keep it in mind.
- The teachers should apply different activities where the students can improve their vocabulary knowledge. One activity could be that the teacher can talk about a specific topic, and while she/he is explaining the topic can mention specific word that at the end he/she can reinforce them by showing the students some flashcards in order to know if they learned the vocabulary the teacher was explaining. So, in that moment the teacher will give to the students the opportunity to recognize different words.
- Another activity that the teachers can use is the describing pictures and playing games. For example; the teacher can show the students some pictures and they will be able to describe what they are watching; so according to that they will conclude what the picture is and at the same time they are learning new words. On the other hand, they can play games such as hang man. In this game the students should be able to guess a word regarding a specific giving topic.
- Also, the teachers can give the opportunity to the students in production-based activities, for example; the teachers can give them different words where they are able to play with them and create their own story; so at that moment they are putting in practice the vocabulary they already know. To conclude, the teachers can prepare assessments that combine both recognition and production-based tasks.
